Certificates
Pet must earn a Retrieve Certificate before he can earn a Flush & Retrieve Certificate.
You can submit for both certifications at the same time if desired.
Retrieve Certificate
- Set the Arena Setup the arena you would for an RTR trial. Take a screenshot.
- Sit, Stay Pet should be sitting with attention on the field (anywhere but the handler) watching for game bird to fall. Petz will often sit after being picked up.
- Find the Bird Pet should be walking or running in any direction, with eyes in the direction of travel. Pet should be alert and not fearful.
- Retrieve the Bird Pet should be holding the bird in its mouth while walking or trotting towards the hula hoop. Pet should be looking at the handler.
- Present the Bird Pet should return the quail to the hula hoop. Pet should be still – standing or sitting – while holding the bird. Pet or bird should be touching/overlapping the hoop. Pet should be focused on handler.
Flush & Retrieve Certificate
- Set the Arena Setup the arena you would for an FRTR trial. Take a screenshot.
- Find the Bird Pet should be focused on and interacting with the bush in a realistic manner – sniffing, investigating, or “pointing” are examples, but you are free to be creative here! Pet must not be carrying the bush in its mouth.
- Flush the Bird Pet should be chasing the bird with eyes focused on the bird.
- Retrieve the Bird Photograph your pet catching (or attempting to catch)the quail out of the air or pouncing on the quail when it lands on the ground.
- Present the Bird Pet should return the quail to the hula hoop. Pet should be still – standing or sitting – while holding the bird. Pet or bird should be touching/overlapping the hoop. Note: Sometimes the bird turns back into a bush during this step. This is acceptable.
Trial Rules and Setup
Setup Instructions
- Place 5 camo quail (RTR trials) or 5 bush quail (FRTR trials) and 1 hula hoop in your carry case then travel to the playpen. You may substitute a plushie or ball for camo quail or frisbee for bush quail, but in the event of a tie, the most realistic setup will receive preference, if applicable.
- Set the playpen wallpaper to “hay.”
- Place the hula hoop in the center of the playpen and lay all five quail around the room. While not an exact science, quail should be a couple body lengths away from the hoop.
- Close the carry case and place it in the bottom left or right corner of the screen.
- Open your stopwatch, bring out the pet, set them down on or touching the hula hoop.
Rules
- The time limit for field trials is 5 minutes.
- Once the timer has started, do not touch your pet except to praise. You may not pick up your pet.
- It’s ok if the hoop gets moved during the trial. If it touches a side wall of the screen, move it back toward the center.
- Your entry should include a screenshot of your arena setup and a collage, GIF(s), or video of the trial. If you are submitting a collage, include a photo for Starting Position, and for each retrieve provide a photo for each of the tasks listed.
- At the completion of each retrieve, reward the pet if desired, then take the bird and place it back in the carry case.
- The trial ends when all five birds are retrieved or missed, or when five minutes have elapsed. Record the completion time.

If the pet is unable to catch the bird in the air, he can pick up the bird from the ground once it hits the ground. Take a photo of your pet catching or picking up the bird. If the pet ignores the bird, the catch is missed and you can leave the bird there. A missed catch does not count against you except lost time.
